A slab pour is a hold point: reinforcement, conduits, sleeves and formwork will soon become difficult or impossible to inspect. The homeowner’s role is not to redesign the slab on site. It is to make sure the responsible engineer and site team complete, record and approve the required checks before concrete placement begins.
Bar diameters, spacing, laps, anchorage, cover, slab thickness, concrete grade, openings and formwork requirements must follow the current engineer-approved drawings and written specification. A generic internet checklist cannot replace them.
1. Confirm the information before the labour
- The site has the current structural, architectural and services drawing revisions.
- Grid lines, levels, slab edges, drops, openings, stairs and projections agree across drawings.
- Any site query or drawing conflict has a written response from the responsible designer or engineer.
- The pour area, sequence, expected volume, access, lighting, equipment and backup plan are understood.
- A named person is authorised to approve the pre-pour inspection and release the pour.
2. Review shuttering and support
Formwork controls the slab’s line, level and finish while supporting wet concrete, workers and equipment. The competent site team should verify stability, bracing, joints, edge protection, safe access and the intended camber or level requirements. Props must bear on suitable support rather than loose stacks or disturbed ground.
The deck should be clean. Open joints, debris and standing water can create defects or loss of cement paste. Release agents, where specified, must not contaminate reinforcement or construction joints.
3. Inspect reinforcement before it is hidden
Visual inspection should be made against the bar schedule and structural drawings—not memory. Record wide views and close-ups that can later be related to a room, grid or member.
- Bar grade, diameter, direction, spacing and number match the approved details.
- Top steel, bottom steel, extra bars, distribution steel and support-zone reinforcement are present where detailed.
- Laps, anchorage, hooks, bends and congestion zones have been reviewed.
- Approved cover blocks and chairs hold reinforcement in position; loose brick pieces are not used as an improvised substitute.
- Bars are reasonably clean and secured against displacement during walking, pumping and vibration.
- Beam-column junctions, slab openings, balconies, stair connections and other critical details have clear photographs.
4. Coordinate electrical and plumbing embeds
Conduits, fan boxes, sleeves, drain outlets and service openings must be coordinated before the pour. Unapproved cutting, bending or displacement of reinforcement to make a service fit is a warning sign. Any conflict should return to the responsible designers for a documented resolution.
Check that boxes and conduits are fixed securely, openings are located and protected, and nothing creates an unintended path for concrete loss. Capture their positions before they disappear.
5. Make a concrete placement plan

Concrete placement should follow the project specification and the direction of the responsible technical team. If rain, equipment failure, supply delay or another interruption changes the planned pour, document what happened and obtain direction for the resulting joint or remedial action.
6. Treat curing as scheduled work
Finishing the surface is not the end of the activity. Early-age protection and curing influence moisture retention and concrete performance. The method, start, duration and access restrictions should follow the specification and engineer’s direction, with responsibility assigned to a named person.
Likewise, formwork and props should not be removed because the next trade is waiting. Removal and reshoring must follow the designed sequence, concrete performance information and competent approval.
The evidence pack a homeowner should receive
- the drawing revisions used for inspection;
- a signed or digitally acknowledged pre-pour checklist;
- dated photographs organised by location and check type;
- concrete delivery and required testing records;
- a note of weather, start and finish time, delays and deviations;
- curing responsibility and follow-up records;
- any non-conformance, engineer instruction and close-out evidence.
“Slab steel photo” is weak evidence. A record linked to the project, floor, room or grid, date, drawing revision, inspector and approval decision can be retrieved when a question appears months later.
